Q. Why do I need search engine optimisation or an SEO consultant?

A. Search engine optimisation, when completed by a qualified SEO consultant, will improve your sites visibility within the major search engines. It depends on many factors, but generally speaking there is always something to improve on a web site to help it rank better. An SEO consultant will help focus your web sites message, remove any ‘blocks’ that stop your site ranking well and improve your web sites position within the major search engines.

Q. That’s all very well but what does ‘improve my web sites position’ mean?

A. Ok, we have all searched for products, services and information using a search engine like Google, Yahoo and MSN. Have you ever wondered how the results are filtered when you hit the ‘search’ button? The search engines (in general) try to give the best results for the words (keywords) you entered in the search box, the way in which the search engines decide which results are worthy of being returned against your search depend on many different factors and differ from one search engine to another. An SEO consultant will know these differences and what factors the search engines look for when returned results against keyword queries. An SEO consultant will optimise a site around certain relevant keywords that match those that are searched for, for example if a potential customer types in ‘SEO consultant’ then the page needs to be optimised for that keyword phrase so it is relevant to the search. It really depends on your budget and the size of your firm, ideally you would enlist a company that constantly monitors your web sites rankings results and traffic and tweak different aspects of the optimisation so you, as the customer, get the best from the work, however, this comes at a price and is often charged at a monthly rate. All website's will benefit from ‘one off’ optimisation, but the managed service is preferable if your budget permits it (and the SEO company is credible). A. Well again, this is a tricky question as there are plenty of companies out there that are overpriced but here is a rough guide. For ‘one off’ SEO, a consultant might charge anywhere between £200 and £1000 but that does depend on the size of the web site and what work is involved, this needs to be decided between you and the SEO consultant within the initial consultation stages. Managed search engine marketing can range from £100 - £2000 a month but again there are different elements to what companies offer so get them to explain what they do, why they do it and how they do it before signing up to any contracts.
